What is the likelihood that your character walks and talks exactly like you? Correct. Slim to none. And so, creative and conscious work on physical, vocal and speech characterization is vital if you want to transform and truly inhabit the world of the character.

Actors will experiment with the body and voice of multiple characters, making vocal and physical and speech “adjustments” for those characters and assessing the outcome. The secret is to make sure each adjustment is connected to the emotional life of the character, their needs, their pains and flaws, otherwise the physical and vocal choices will look stuck on, like an afterthought. The organic connection between emotional life, physical and vocal life is emphasized throughout.

Participants also learn to work ”Outside-In.” The accomplished actor who knows how to employ a lisp, a limp, a low register or raised, tense shoulders understands that an external or “outside” stimulus can be the key to opening up a rich, internal, emotional life.
